Welcome
Welcome

Barwon HeadsLions President Roger McDonnell extends a warm welcome to visitors to this our Club Website.   Lions of the Geelong South Barwon Lions Club are members of Lions Clubs International, a community service organisation dedicated to the idea that the men and women who live in a community are in the best position to know who needs help and why.   Lions have been a part of the Australian community since 1947, and a proud part of the South Barwon  communities since 1965.    They have been helping to serve the community without promise or want of reward and are people just like you!

Lions are ordinary people doing incredible things!

Are YOU Interested in becoming a Lions member?

To Join a Lions Club is by invitation, however applications are encouraged from all interested members of the community.

Membership is open to men and women over the age of 18 years and of good moral character and reputation.  If you are interested in joining Lions and reaping the benefits of fellowship, and wanting to share in the strong sense of achievement and reward resulting in serving your community, click on the link to be put in touch with a local Lions Club in your area.

About Us

The Lions Club of South Barwon was formed on 8th July 1965, Australian club number 372. The Club chartered on the 12th November of that year with a membership of 18, and was sponsored by the Lions Club of Geelong.  It was the third club to be established in the Geelong area behind the Geelong & Corio Bay Clubs.

The South Barwon Lions Club has hosted two District conventions. The first in 1970 and the second in 1987.

The Club has held their dinner meetings at various venues around Geelong over the years until February 2003 when their own Lions Den at the Geelong Showgrounds was officially opened by the Mayor of Geelong, Cr. Barbara Abley.

The Geelong Pastoral & Agricultural Society made available a large building  which was converted to a valuable asset and home venue for the Club and other bodies wishing to use it for functions. The Lions undertook the lining of the ceiling, building of storage areas, repainting inside and out, replacement of windows, carpeting and blinds while GAPS undertook the rewiring and heating of the building, and shared the cost of seating.

The club has four Melvin Jones Fellows, nine James D Richardson Certificate Awardees and two Life Members of Lions International. The Club enjoys a good retention record with most of the current membership being members of long standing.
